What...Will, I want to thank you for your vigilance. What we need is to know a proper response in a situation like this. Should it be, "Officer, I do not wish to submit, but I will if you are threatening violence to my person or property"? Should we carry recording devices? What if starting a recorder CAUSES the violence?tl montgomeryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10386351581017938628noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32869165.post-1167792948006036742007-01-02T19:55:00.000-07:002007-01-02T19:55:00.000-07:00well, I tell you what:My dad is Albanian and he we...well, I tell you what:
My dad is Albanian and he went back to visit during the period of "chaos"...

A checkpoint was set up and the vehicle he was travelling in was stopped. The cop said "do you have any weapons?" At which point the driver grinned and pulled back a blanket covering machine guns and rocket launchers and ammo belts and said "Sure! I remember telling friends that this wasn't freedom. The typical responses were: 'but it's for our own safety', 'it's not that hard' or somesuch passive accpetance. Pretty soon they were issuing 45 dollar fines for not wearing them and people were getting pulled over for other reasons but that was the offense that got them ticketed. It wasn't long before everyone was wearing it without thinking. Now we all accept it as 'the right thing to do'. They took away one small freedom and most of us don't even remember it as such.

I'll tell you what we have here. It's called "Meth Watch". Now, Meth is a big problem in the Northwest for certain and I do not condone drug abuse but what Meth Watch does is reward anyone for turning in a meth user or identifying a meth house. They say that meth accounts for about 80% of the crime in our area and they 'need all the help they can get'. So, are we now reduced to spying on our neighbors?

Perhaps this is a bad example because drug use is illegal but what an easy way to get folks to help safeguard their community. Look mister officer sir, there is a christian living in that house, he prays and everything.Warrenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17955214419341377532noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32869165.post-1167758616416521632007-01-02T10:23:00.000-07:002007-01-02T10:23:00.000-07:00The money trail is the key!Almost none of the chec...The money trail is the key!

Almost none of the checkpoints would run without grant money handed down by the almighty state capital, some of which they receive from D.C. (depends on the state). Most local PDs can't afford to run the check points on their own.

But none of the check points would run at all if the alleged Supreme Court had kept its nose out of state business. When they heard cases argunig the contitutionality of check points, then "ruled" they were constitutional, the flood gates were torn open. Soon thereafter the DUI points were running. The camel wasn't happy with having only his head in the tent. So next came the seatbelt check points. And soon there will be others.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32869165.post-1167713954333748942007-01-01T21:59:00.000-07:002007-01-01T21:59:00.000-07:00“You're saying you're going to make up a reason to...“You're saying you're going to make up a reason to arrest me?” Darrow asked.

“No I didn't,” lied the officer. “I said we would find a reason.” [emphasis mine]

Hmm, it seems the officer in question here wants to dabble in nuance and fuzzy logic. The phrases find a reason and make up a reason mean one and the same as uttered in this context. It should be obvious to all, but the low-wattage dummy loads.

Indeed, the cops attempting to involve themselves in ones personal business is stepping over the line and I would reply in like manner. That tactic is practiced precisely because police(wo)men have been so conditioned to think of the public as perspective criminals before the fact, as you pointed out.

However...sigh...it pains me to say this, but in the next scenario you presented about the fella "blasting his tunes" (as I'm all but certain the "tunes" in question blasting out weren't of the Average White Band, Elvin Bishop, or Tchaikovsky variety) probably means I also would be annoyed in the extreme. Sometimes when I hear the far off hum of a "Congo Rover," long before it's seen, I often ponder whether I should take my Maverick riot gun and blast one of these shakin', rattlin', and rollin', low-rider, bongo-bangin' "Congo Rovers" on the bass beat with 3" 00 buck or even "Dragon's Breath" and deaden the jungle noise instantly or burn it up. BUT, I manage to toss that enticing thought aside and refrain since I don't want to deal with cops unless absolutely necessary, i.e. after a real killin', in which case the stress would be tolerable and expected at least.

Why do folk think they can use government as a benignant income generator, for financial assistance, or even, in some cases, for subsistence, and not expect the malignant side to manifest itself?

I read recently how homeowners, business owners, and other middle class residents who lived in the New Orleans area are not happy with [big daddy] government not getting them the aid they cry out for and have applied for fast enough.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
